Bundesliga Matchday 1 Preview
Hi there and welcome to the first article on our brand new website! In this article, we are back on the Bundesliga talking about our previews into the matchday of the season. There will be a full season preview coming out over the next few days but for now, let’s get into this.
BAYERN MUNICH V TSG 1899 HOFFENHEIM
This is the curtain raiser. A lot has changed in Munich since the end of last season. Niko Kovac has replaced Jupp Heyneckes after he left at the end of the season and Germany have crashed out the World Cup for the first team since 1938. In this fixture, Niko Kovac will be looking to make a very quick start to his life at the helm of arguably the largest club in Germany. There haven’t been many new signings in Munich but they will still be a very strong side as they are the defending champions. The new boys for Bayern Munich coming into this are Leon Goretzka who has finally joined up in Munich after agreeing on a transfer earlier in the year. Renato Sanches and Serge Gnabry have both returned from loan and will be looking to impress Kovac quickly.
Hoffenheim, on the other hand, have a lot of players out injured for this game which couldn’t come at a worse time for them as they will need all the help they can get if they want to get a result away at Bayern. Julian Nagelsmann is still the manager after much speculation about his future so this will be a huge bonus too. For this game, I’m predicting a 2-1 win for Bayern Munich, I am quietly optimistic about Hoffenheim getting a point but there seem to be too many injuries for this to happen, unfortunately.
VFL WOLFSBURG V FC SCHALKE 04
Wolfsburg have had a couple of campaigns to forget and have once again invested a lot of money in the squad and now it’s time to get going for the wolves. They come up against a Schalke side who finished 2nd in the Bundesliga last season so it won’t be an easy task to get all 3 points in this fixture who have equally spent as well. Although Schalke will have to learn how to live without Goretzka, Meyer and Kehrer who have all left the side this summer. For this fixture I am going to predict a Schalke 2-1 win, I think it may take a bit of time for Wolfsburg to get going and if Schalke can carry their form over from last season then they may just be too much for the Wolves. But I think this will be a very close game.
HERTHA BERLIN V FC NÜRNBERG
If I’m perfectly honest I really don’t know what to expect from Nürnberg this season. I think that Hertha Berlin will be able to dispatch of them in this game pretty easily which is why I’m backing a 2-0 win in this fixture. Nürnberg will have to quickly adjust to the Bundesliga but whilst I don’t think they will be relegated this season, I do think that Hertha will take all 3 points at the Olympiastadion on Saturday afternoon.
WERDER BREMEN V HANNOVER 96
Werder Bremen and Hannover 96 will both be looking to be as far away as possible from the relegation zone as possible and although we’re only on matchday 1 this could be huge in terms of how both sides finish at the end of the season. Davy Klassen has been Bremen’s star signing from Everton this summer and will be the key in making sure that they survive another season in the Bundesliga and build on their 11th place finish last season. Hannover 96 will be once again relying on Niclas Füllkrug for their goals as they themselves look to build on their 13th place finish on their return to the Bundesliga. I predict 2-1 Werder Bremen.
FORTUNA DÜSSELDORF V FC AUGSBURG
I think Düsseldorf will be up against it this season and I would love to be proved wrong on that due to everyone loves an underdog. The opposition could be much worse to kick off and I think that Fortuna has a great chance of taking home all 3 points in this fixture. After winning the 2. Bundesliga Düsseldorf will be full of confidence as they are not used to losing much at all. This could prove to be the difference over the course of the season. Augsburg haven’t strengthened much and will struggle over the course of the season I think, their main signing is Andre Hahn from Hamburg, so it will be interesting to see if lives up to his early hype. For this fixture I predict a 1-1 draw.
SC FREIBURG V EINTRACHT FRANKFURT
SC Freiburg found themselves near the drop last season and I think that this season may be 1 too many for them and relegation looms. Eintracht Frankfurt however were on cloud 9 at the end of last season after winning the DFB Pokal. Although in the Supercup revenge was well and truly dished out as Frankfurt were defeated 5-0. I think that Frankfurt won’t be able to live up to their success of last season but will definitely not be there to make up the numbers. I think a top half finish is on the cards and Frankfurt will win this game 1-0.
BORUSSIA MÖNCHENGLADBACH V BAYER LEVERKUSEN
Another big game this matchday as both sides will be dreaming of making the top 4 next season. Borussia Mönchengladbach found themselves underperforming in 9th place last season but with young prospects such as Denis Zakaria and Alassane Plea this should be a better season for them. I think this game will be full of goals and I’m going to say that either side will win 3-2. I just can’t put my finger on who will take this.
MAINZ 05 V VFL STUTTGART
Mainz was able to escape relegation on the last day of the season in 2017/18. A situation they’ll be hoping to avoid this season. Coming into this fixture Stuttgart will be full of belief after going on a meteoric run under Tayfun Korkut and finishing 7th. For this game I predict that this will be a pretty drab game of football if I’m perfectly honest and that this game finishes 0-0. Although now I have said that expect a 9 goal thriller.
BORUSSIA DORTMUND V RB LEIPZIG
Definitely one of the biggest fixtures for matchday 1 and similar to Gladbach and Leverkusen both sides will be aiming to qualify for the Champions League next season. This could be huge for the final standings in the top 4 at the end of the season as a defeat for Dortmund will put them at a disadvantage to RB Leipzig already. Both sides will be looking to give Bayern Munich a run for their money after flopping last season finishing 4th and 6th respectively. Both sides know that on their day they can be one of the best sides in the league and it will be discovering this form that will be the difference in this game. But because of the home advantage, I think that Dortmund will win 3-1.
