Jiri Pavlenka

Jiri Pavlenka

First up, the goalkeeper position. Pavlenka has definitely been Werder Bremen’s best player so far this season. He’s come up huge in big games for Bremen and who knows where they’d be without him. Despite this being his first season in the Bundesliga, it hasn’t taken long for him to adapt to his new surroundings. Pavlenka signed for Werder Bremen for just 3 million euros at in the summer of 2017 and he has proved to be such a shrewd signing in the league. This is why he’s made the Bundesliga team of the season. As well as this he’s also been one of 5 goalkeepers in the Bundesliga this season that has started every single game in the Bundesliga this season. Jiri Pavlenka is the best rated goalkeeper in the league according to Transfermarkt. So Jiri Pavlenka makes the number 1 spot in the Bundesliga team of the season.

Joshua Kimmich

Now Josh Kimmich has definitely been one of the hottest prospects in German football for a few years now. But every season that passes by the better and better he gets as a player. With this season being no exception in the slightest. Josh Kimmich has no doubt been the best right back in the Bundesliga this season. Not only is Kimmich superb at defending but he’s also been super effective at providing support for wingers and getting forward in attack too.

Kimmich may not be the quickest player for Bayern either but he still manages to perfect his positioning for overlaps so that he can provide a cross for his teammates waiting in the box. I’m really hoping that Kimmich will stay at Bayern Munich for his career as he is such a great asset to the Bundesliga. With early comparisons to him reaching the same heights as Philip Lahm in his career. The sky is definitely the limit for Kimmich.

Mats Hummels Bayern Munich

Mats Hummels

Mats Hummels has been super solid for Bayern Munich this season. It seems he has done enough to warrant a place in this season’s team of the season. This season Hummels has scored 1 goal and recorded 2 assists from his natural centre back position. But it’s overall leadership and defending prowess which has put him head and shoulders above the rest this season. He also one of the best rated defenders in the Bundesliga this season. If there is one person you want both attacking and defending set pieces then you definitely want Mats Hummels there. Now after matchday 32, Bayern Munich have conceded just 23 goals in the league. Mats Hummels has been one of the main contributing factors to keeping this statistic low.

Naldo

The only Schalke 04 players in the team of the season despite their second position. Naldo has been the commander of the Schalke back line all season with his outstanding leadership. Schalke have improved from their 10th place finish last season tremendously and this is no small part down to the stability that Naldo offers. As it stands Naldo is the 2nd highest goalscorer for Schalke which shows he contribute both up front and at the back. Naldo has been so organised with his defensive teammates this season. He’s rarely made mistakes for Schalke which has been huge in transforming Schalke this season. Domenico Tedesco has definitely been a breath of fresh air for Schalke and it’s great to see that even at 35 years of age, when players are usually declared as “past their peak”, Naldo is still doing bits in the Bundesliga.

Philipp Max

Philipp Max

He has to be in the team of the season after his huge season at Augsburg. With 13 assists and a goal, no defender has given more of a contribution in the Bundesliga. He’s also the league leader for assists so far this season. Philipp Max has only missed out on 10 minutes of Bundesliga football so far this season. 13 assists from the left back position is some serious going especially for a left back.

He’s become a key player for Augsburg and he’s definitely become one of the first names on the team sheet. It will be very interesting to see if he stays at Augsburg next season as you’d expect there to be a lot of interest in him this summer. But focusing on the here and now. There is no doubting that Philipp Max has been the best left back in the Bundesliga as he puts up a big fight to be in Joachim Löw’s plans for the World Cup. His crossing and ball playing goes much deeper than hitting and hoping that someone gets their head on it when he’s playing passing to the likes of Alfred Finbogasson and Michael Gregoritsch.

Naby Keita

The Liverpool bound central midfielder has been voted as the best player for RB Leipzig this season, in what has been a disappointing campaign for Die Roten Bullen. Naby Keita has scored 5 goals and given 6 assists during the Bundesliga so far this season. Keita has definitely been showing Liverpool what they can expect from the Guinea international. Naby Keita has covered so much ground in games for RBL that it will be very difficult for them to replace a player who is so good in both defence and attack that can be the engine of the midfield, as well as Keita, has done in his time in the Bundesliga.

Although Keita hasn’t always been able to keep his cool when it comes to discipline much this season. There’s no denying that he’s come in well in the big games that matter for RB Leipzig. Such as when they played Bayern Munich at the Red Bull Arena and he scored a goal and an assist which has all been huge to make sure that RB Leipzig has qualified for the Europa League next season.

Arturo Vidal

Arturo Vidal

Arturo Vidal has been the best central midfielder in the Bundesliga by far. Vidal has the power to control the midfield in any game, and this is what he’s been doing all season. Although he has missed out on a few games this season due to injury Vidal has been a key member of the Bayern Munich side all season. With 6 goals and 2 assists from his central midfielder position, Vidal has provided more than just a pillar of midfield stability. Although his playing time may be over now until next season due to injury. Vidal has certainly left his mark on the Bundesliga this season for a dominating Bayern Munich side.

Arjen Robben

Despite being 34 years of age, Arjen Robben is still having defenders lives on the wing. With 5 goals and 7 assists in the Bundesliga this season, Robben shows no signs of slowing down. No matter who you are, Arjen Robben will cut inside and score against you. Players like Marius Wolf and Christian Pulisic have also enjoyed really good seasons in the Bundesliga but you voted for Arjen Robben to be your right winger in the Bundesliga team of the season. Robben has been a great mentor for players like Kingsley Coman who are really starting to break through in the league.

James Rodriguez

James Rodriguez

The 2017/18 season needed to be a big season for James Rodriguez, after falling into a rut during his time at his former club Real Madrid. But this season has been huge for James and he’s made a huge contribution to Bayern Munich this season with 6 goals and 10 assists. He’s been the definition of Bayern’s big game player all season with big performances in games against Bayer Leverkusen, Dortmund, and Schalke who have all been Bayern’s biggest rivals this season.

Apart from a few injuries throughout the season, James has participated in pretty much every single game this season. Which shows just how much of a key player Jupp Heyneckes regards him. Rodriguez had to be featured on this team of the season. Whether Bayern Munich decides to keep James Rodriguez once his loan expires in Germany at the end of the season is still yet to be decided. But I would love to see James stay here in the Bundesliga.

Leon Bailey Leverkusen

Leon Bailey

At the start of the season, I tipped Leon Bailey to make a big impact for Leverkusen and it did take him a while to get going and adapt to the league. But I didn’t expect him to do so well this season for Bayer Leverkusen. Leverkusen finished in 12th place last season and to be honest not much has changed in the way of signings. But Leon Bailey has definitely brought more flair, pace, and agility to the side which has helped them massively as they look to secure Champions League football once more.

Near the start of the season, Bailey was being played out on the right wing which didn’t find much success until he started to play more on the left hand side and then the goals and assists started to come thick and fast. So far Leon Bailey has scored 9 goals and has provided 6 assists which when combined gives him one of the highest contributions to his side out of the Leverkusen squad.

Robert Lewandowski

Robert Lewandowski

The top goalscorer in the Bundesliga by a country mile this season. Partly due to Aubameyang’s transfer to Arsenal in January but that doesn’t take any credit away from the outstanding season that the polish striker has had. As always Robert Lewandowski fires in so many goals for Bayern and this year was no exception in the slightest.

Lewandowski has run riot in the Bundesliga by scoring 28 goals and providing 1 assist in the league. Which is 13 more than his closest rival Nils Petersen of Freiburg who has scored 15 goals this season in the league (As correct as after matchday 32). As we all know Robert Lewandowski has the power to change a game in an instant. He may go quiet all game (unlikely) but you can guarantee that he will pop up in the box at some point and put one in the back of the net. He’s proved to be the match winner 7 times so far this season which is the largest out of any player in the Bundesliga.

Honorable Mentions For Team Of The Season

Sven Ulreich

Ulreich has been a huge part of the Bayern Munich side this season. While many will play down his role in the side due to him playing for Bayern but he has filled Manuel Neuer’s gloves absolutely superbly this season. He has had some big moments in the league too. While Bayern may be way out in the lead against their nearest rival in the league. Sven Ulreich has really stepped up to make sure and has sometimes been the difference between winning and drawing in some games. Even Thomas Müller himself has come out and said that Ulreich has been Bayern Munich’s man of the year.

Daniel Caligiuri

Daniel Caligiuri has often found himself playing from the right wing back position and for someone who is a natural winger. He’s done a great job of adapting his game to perform well in this position. With a huge 6 goals and 9 assists, Daniel Caligiuri has given both creativity up front as well as a sure defensive job to keep Schalke in their top 4 place. He’s adapted to Tedesco’s system perfectly which has probably made him one of the first names on the team sheet under him.

Salif Sané

Salif Sané has been rock solid for Hannover 96 this season. It was always going to be tough for Hannover to stay in the division and many had them to take a trip back down. I know for one I backed them as early relegation favourites, but it wasn’t to be. A big factor of this is down to Salif Sané leadership and commandeering of the Hannover backline this season.

Benjamin Pavard

The young Frenchman that has taken the critics by surprise at how well he’s performed for Stuttgart in the Bundesliga this season. Not many people expected Benjamin Pavard to step up so well to the Bundesliga and the maturity that he has shown is something that should be looked up to by any young player looking to make their name in Germany. Pavard has definitely been Stuttgart’s best player this season and has been a key member of the squad who’ve managed to keep their name in the Bundesliga for at least another year.

Serge Gnabry

Gnabry has been absolutely sublime for Hoffenheim this season. Many questioned if Hoffenheim would be able to replicate their successes of last season. Although he hasn’t done enough to get in the team of the season according to the polls. Despite missing out on the majority of the first half of the season. Gnabry has absolutely smashed it in 2018 so far as Hoffenheim look to secure themselves Champions League qualification once again.

Leon Goretzka

Although Leon Goretzka may be leaving Schalke at the end of the season for rivals Bayern Munich. It’s been another great season for the centre midfielder but unfortunately, he didn’t do enough according to you to warrant a place in the starting 11. But nevertheless with 4 goals and 4 assists for Schalke. He’s made more than his fair share of a contribution to taking Champions League football back to Gelsenkirchen.

Thomas Müller

Now Thomas Müller has been a big name in the Bundesliga for years. This season has been no different either, he’s scored 8 goals and contributed 14 assists so far this season too. This means he currently has the highest amount of assists in the league. Müller has hit the form of his life as we head into the summer of the World Cup 2018 in Russia. He’s helped Bayern Munich to a potential double so far this season and his performances show no signs of slowing down either meaning Thomas Müller could still be dominating the Bundesliga for a long time yet.

Michael Gregoritsch

Gregoritsch has been outstanding for Augsburg. Participating in 30 out of the 32 games played so far in the Bundesliga. With 13 goals and 4 assists, Gregoritsch has really started to kick on after his transfer from Hamburger SV. He’s been a great secondary striker and he’s worked immensely well with fellow striker Alfred Finnbogason. Who knows where he’ll be next season as he still has huge amounts of potential to showcase still.

Nils Petersen

Nils Petersen has pretty much been Mr SC Freiburg this season having scored over half of their entire goals tally in the Bundesliga this season. Now if you’d had said to some people before matchday 1 that Nils Petersen would be the 2nd highest goalscorer after matchday 32. They would have probably called you mad. But Nils Petersen has definitely earned himself a place on the bench of the team of the season. He’s been a vital part of this Freiburg side and if they stay up then Petersen will have made more than his contribution to this. Who knows where they would be without him?
