Bundesliga Young Talents

Timo Horn

He’s been linked with big money moves to England for a while now and he definitely has a lot of potential in his career to be one of the replacements for Manuel Neuer when he decides to retire. It looks like it will be the battle between him and Bernd Leno for the number 1 spot in the national side. A fight that I don’t think Timo Horn will shy away from, if FC Köln were to be relegated in the summer then you have to think that Timo Horn will be one of the first players snapped up by someone else in the transfer window. It does make you wonder where Köln would be without him. As it does look like FC Köln will be relegated to the 2. Bundesliga and I think if they didn’t have Timo Horn between the sticks, they may already be relegated.

Christian Fruchtl

Bayern Munich’s third choice keeper that you’ve probably never heard of. But you should definitely remember the name. He’s been promoted to the Bayern Munich senior side this season. Which is great for his development as a player. He’s already got bags of potential, and training with some of the best goalkeepers in Europe such as Manuel Neuer & Sven Ulreich will only make him a better goalkeeper. So far this season when he’s been playing in the Regionalliga Bayern, he’s played 18 games and only conceded 15 goals along the way including 7 clean sheets. So it may be a few years until we see him starting for Bayern Munich week in week out. But I am very much looking forward to seeing how he develops over the next few years.

Joshua Kimmich

One of the more high profile young talents in the Bundesliga. Josh Kimmich has been labelled by Joachim Löw as “one of the greatest talents I have ever seen”. This is the same manager who has also managed some of the biggest legends of German football so to hear such a statement about such a young player shows the level of potential Kimmich has. In Kimmich’s short career he has already won a lot of major honours which includes: 3 Bundesliga titles, 1 DFB Pokal & 1 Confederations Cup. The list will surely grow as his career continues as the lad has only just turned 23 years old. Kimmich is already one of the best in the Bundesliga both in attack and defence. Just as Phillip Lahm leaves the game as one of the greats, another successor emerges as his replacement.

Benjamin Pavard

The young French defender has had an amazing breakthrough season in the Bundesliga at Stuttgart. Despite being just 22 years old, the young man has shown huge amounts of maturity and confidence to help Stuttgart keep their place in the Bundesliga for next season. The young Frenchman has already been handed 3 caps at the highest level for France which shows the level of growth he’s had over the last two years. He signed for Stuttgart at the start of the 2016/17 for just 5 million pounds and since then his market value has risen to a huge 25 million pounds (according to Transfermarkt). There will definitely be a host of clubs across Europe fighting for his signature this summer, and Stuttgart will find it very hard to keep him this summer. A remarkable stat for Pavard is that Benjamin Pavard has featured in every single game for Stuttgart this season, showing that he is more than good enough at the Bundesliga level.

Niklas Süle

One of the best performing defenders in the Bundesliga this season. Many questioned his move to Munich from Hoffenheim at the end of the 2016/17 as many didn’t expect him to get much game time. But he’s appeared in 24 games so far this season scoring 1 goal and registering an assist in the process. He’s also been a huge part of the side that has won the Bundesliga title this season including the 14 clean sheets that Bayern Munich has registered so far this season. As both Mats Hummels & Jerome Boateng reach the peak of their careers, Niklas Süle is definitely the one to fill the position that will be left there when one of them retires. Süle’s versatility is also something to be reckoned with as Jupp Heyneckes has experimented with him playing in the defensive midfielder role which could see him permanently moving into this position if Bayern plays better with him there.

Çağlar Söyüncü

One of the unsung heroes from in the Bundesliga season. Now if you’re a Freiburg fan then you’re definitely going to know who this guy is. He has been a key player in Freiburg’s second season since the clubs return to the Bundesliga, where he’s featured in 25 games for SC Freiburg this season and scored 1 goal. In just under 2 years Söyüncü’s market value has gone from 2 million euros to 12 million euros. There is currently a huge amount of hype around the defender at the moment. He’s been linked with big money moves to clubs like Arsenal & Everton in the premier league which may be the next step in his career should Freiburg be relegated from the Bundesliga this season.

Dayot Upamecano

Definitely one for the future. Upamecano has slotted into the RB Leipzig defence like a glove and at just the young age of 19 years of age. He has already impressed on both a domestic and European level. Originally a youth product of Valencienne in France, he transferred to RB Salzburg from which he ended up at RB Leipzig for 5 million which seems to be a steal considering when he realise that James Tomkins cost Crystal Palace £10 million. He will dominate the air as he is 6 foot 4 tall and already shows a sheer amount of intelligence for the CB position and his high class performance over the course of the season has seen endless plaudits come his way. He is definitely one of the highest potential centre backs in the Bundesliga right now. As he has just been called up to the French U21 squad after representing France at every youth level.

Denis Zakaria

At just 21 years of age, Denis Zakaria has taken the Bundesliga by storm since his transfer from his homeland side of Young Boys. Although Mönchengladbach is unlikely to qualify for any European competition next season. That doesn’t mean that Zakaria has been a failure for Gladbach. He’s scored 2 goals and registered 3 assists from the defensive midfielder position, and he’s arguably been the best Mönchengladbach midfielder this season. In the bigger picture, Mönchengladbach have been quite an inconsistent side in the league this season but Zakaria has smashed it and he can only get better as a player. So he is definitely one to watch for next season. Learning from Christoph Kramer who has been in the Bundesliga game for a while has definitely had a positive effect as their partnership has kept Gladbach solid and it’ll be great to watch him grow as a player next season.

Leon Goreztka

Now it has been well publicised that Leon Goretzka has sealed his move to Bayern Munich from Schalke 04. Now Goretzka has been a huge name both at Schalke 04 and in the Bundesliga for a few years now. So everyone who pays attention to the Bundesliga knows about the ability and potential of the player. With some of Bayern Munich’s older players getting closer to retirement Goreztka will definitely be more than ready to fill their shoes when the time approaches. As we’ve seen from many players and not just in Germany such as Ryan Sessegnon of Fulham in England. If you’re good enough, you’re old enough. But Goretzka’s fast pace means that he can turn defence into attacking in seconds. Which when you’re coming up against Bayern Munich is the last thing you want. Especially with their pacey wingers like Kingsley Coman & Arjen Robben. But Leon Goretzka is certainly a jack of all trades. Defending, attacking and passing, he can do to the highest standards. Goretzka is hot property right now and if you haven’t heard of him already then you definitely will soon enough.

Weston McKennie

Weston McKennie

Another young American that has starting to make major breakthroughs in the Bundesliga is Weston McKennie. The Schalke midfielder who may be Leon Goretzka’s successor once he leaves Gelsenkirchen for Bayern Munich this summer. McKennie has very much stepped up to the occasion this season. Schalke 04 have just finished in 2nd place in the Bundesliga and it really shows that McKennie has what it takes to make sure that his side stays up in the higher ranks of the league table. His passing and dribbling game show real signs of promise which means that soon enough you have to imagine that plenty of interest will be shown from some of the European giants.

Christian Pulisic

Another one of the more high profile Bundesliga young talents on this list. Pulisic has already been making waves both domestically and continentally. So far this season Pulisic has scored 4 goals and recorded 5 assists for his teammates. Christian Pulisic has become one of the key players in Dortmund’s squad and has started the majority of games this season. Which just have high Dortmund value him as a player and recognise his ability. With electrifying pace and agility, he blitzes past defenders in an instant. The Bundesliga Americans are really ripping it up in the Bundesliga this season and they definitely have a lot of potential which is great for the future of American football (Yes football not soccer).

Amine Harit

There have been a lot of breakout stars of Schalke 04 this season. Including Moroccan star Amine Harit, his skill has excellent dribbling skills and this has been terrifying for defenders in the Bundesliga as Schalke sealed qualification for the Champions League once again. I really hope that Harit can keep it up in the Bundesliga and excel himself even further next season as Harit really does look like a special talent. With his quick feet and vision he can beat players in an instant and pick out the vital pass for a goal.

Kai Havertz

At just 18 years of age, he has already played a lot of Bundesliga football for a young player. This is an opportunity that a lot of young players never get during their careers, you just have to take a look at players like Scott Sinclair when he joined Manchester City, or Renato Sanches when he moved to Bayern Munich and has since been loaned out at Swansea after failing to make an impact. The maturity that Havertz shows when he plays is unreal. I’m currently writing this at 19 years old and there is no way I would be able to have the composure that Havertz shows when he plays. Which is probably why I’m not a professional though, to be honest!

Leon Bailey Leverkusen

Leon Bailey

I did predict that Leon Bailey would have a big 2017/18 season for Bayer Leverkusen on our old website and he really has delivered this season. His lightning speed and agility have made him a nightmare to handle for almost everyone in the Bundesliga this season. Despite having a slow start to the season, Bailey has definitely adapted to the Bundesliga which has meant that Bayer Leverkusen will be playing European football next season.

Jadon Sancho

Jadon Sancho has already been previously mentioned in an article which you can find here. After a very promising start with Borussia Dortmund since signing from Manchester City last summer. Jadon Sancho has already started to make some waves in the Bundesliga indicating there is plenty still to come from the young Englishman. With his flair play and outstanding creativity in an already very creative Dortmund side.

Jann-Fiete Arp

One of the very few shining lights to come out of Hamburg this season as they look destined for relegation. The 18 year old striker has definitely left his mark on the Bundesliga this season. Now Arp may have only scored 2 goals this season. But this was in a struggling Hamburg side that looks destined for relegation. Which if you consider that the lad is only 18 years old, he has been thrown into the deep end to kickstart his career. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have potential, Jann-Fiete Arp has already caught the eyes of Bayern Munich who have been linked with a move for the striker. The striker has made 18 appearances so far this season which is all great learning and experience for the young lad. He will have a big decision to make regarding where he is next season. One option is he can leave for a Bundesliga club who will definitely be after him following HSV’s relegation. Or he can stay at Hamburg and help them to get promoted, whilst no doubt scoring many goals, especially with the ability that he already has.

Alexander Isak

I would love to see Alexander Isak given more of a chance for Dortmund now. Especially since Michy Batshuayi has returned to Chelsea following his injury. He’s appeared for Dortmund 5 times during the 2017/18 season. With no clear striker leading the line next season for Dortmund is it time for Isak to be given more of a chance and thrown into the deep end as the number 9 at Borussia Dortmund. Of course, it would be a huge gamble as Dortmund have always had a free scoring striker at their disposal but it would be really exciting to watch Alexander Isak develop over these next few seasons in the Bundesliga.
